When’s the best time to get writery?

In college, my writing teacher taught me that, as a writer, it’s best to get into a pattern of behavior. Write in the same place, at the same time, with the same pen/pencil/computer/typewriter/stone&chisel. As a stay at home dad, trying to make it into the ranks of the pros, I have to write, well, whenever I can.

I used write at night. Into the wee hours, as it were. Back when I was a student, getting most of my work done while regular folks slept. I wouldn’t schedule any classes before 10am if I could help it, and I’d stay up late getting my stuff done.

Now, with kids and a wife who, thankfully, wants me in bed with her at night, I tend to write in the middle of the day. I don’t always write at that time–I have to get it in when I can. But 1pm is my preference.

So I’m curious, what time of day do you like to write?

  1. I’ve learned that finding time to write is not nearly as effective as making time to write. As soon as I dedicated two hours every morning (and I’m definitely not a morning guy) my output started hitting consistent highs. Give it a try, and see if it works for you too!
